Sad Bowl of Cereal

Friday, August 25th, 2006

Ok, got my frosted flakes, and some nice juicy blue berries. Put them in a bowl, mix them together. Um. Now comes the milk.

What? No milk? Geez! That sucks!

I’m so set on this bowl of cereal I’m walking over to the store to get milk right now. I mean I finished it last night, less than eight hours ago, and I already forgot it’s all gone? No cat, and no other other soul around to finish it either. Just me. Where has my memory gone, and more important why has it gone? Not enough milk I bet.

No One Hears You Scream

With the Internet down at my office for 32 hours, my online addiction is becoming very apparent. Everything I do somehow leads to the Internet.

I wanted to install mySQL server, but need to download it first.

What’s the weather going to be like? Let me just go to www… never mind.

I know: I’ll write an article about Internet file types. “… GIF files are capable of 256 colours, PNG of millions”. How many millions? I don’t know, let’s look it up… D’OH!”

Enemy Territory it is, it’s been a while since I played an online game.

Back ups. I’ll automate my backups using Keep. I open up Synaptic - a Linux software installation manager - to download and install Keep, but am reminded of my lack of an Internet connection.

The invoicing system I’ve been writing could use a few hours of my time. Too bad I need access to my online mysql database.

That’s bloody it! I’m calling the cable company to see if they can fix me up with their service since DSL is out. What’s their number? I don’t know, their website is down.

Did I tell you yet that my Internet is down? Maybe what I really need is a 12 step program for Internet addicts, but I’m not sure how to find one without the Internet. I’ll suffer in silence, because no one can hear you scream when your Internet is down.

Rammstein & Amerika

Tuesday, August 1st, 2006

What could be better than mid-day research on a newly discovered band? It all started with Amerika. The video itself is worth watching, even if you don’t understand the lyrics.

Memorable quotes from my Rammstein research:

Amerika: A German song, partly in English, about how America reigns over world culture and politics—for good or bad.

Jam Showbiz described (Rammstein’s) ‘Mutter’ as “music to invade Poland to.”

If we choose or reject music, cinema or any art form only for political reasons, then we are missing the point of art.

You know things are bad when the modem won’t connect to the Internet for half an hour and the providers phone line is busy. Yes, actually busy! Feels like someone cut the oxygen supply into my office; And without the Internet I’m about as useful as someone who’s been without oxygen for a good 10 to 15 minutes.

I’m not the one to call a service provider first. I know these things tend to play out for themselves without having to sit on hold. It’s just that I was on such a nice run catching up to my work load and bills, it sucks having it all dry up while I sit here and wait for some much needed Internet access. Fiddlesticks.
