Deep Thoughts At 6:00 (On a 24Hr Clock)

Tuesday, May 2nd, 2006

The decision is final. I’m going for an all-nighter. At this point I’d end up sleeping through the day if I hit the sack now, so I may as well see how much I can salvage by staying awake… trying to be productive, or something.

It must have been the couple of open endings I encountered during the day that have kept me from putting a closure on my day. First it was Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood, an open ending that originally left me unsatisfied. Then it was “A History of Violence” that ended without tying up all the threads (although I’d argue there really is only one ending which is pretty obvious if you rewatch the first sex scene - like you needed another reason, right? :D - and what was said after).

Few hours later I am glad for having the chance to make my own ending for Oryx and Crake. Great book, thumbs up for Margaret Atwood.

The gory side-track of life in “A History of Violence” didn’t exactly create a sleeping mood (no regrets at having watched it “just before going to sleep”). It makes you think about the simple truth that death is part of life, and that some people arrive at that final check point quietly, while others arrive with a bang. Either way, we’re all heading the same way. In the end how we got there is just a minor technicality.
