The Aura Is Back

Sunday, May 14th, 2006

As a teenager I was plagued by migraines. I’d get a migraine attack about once a month and feel the effect for 3-4 days afterwards. They would start with what is referred to as an aura (visual disturbances that are quite sickening but carry no pain), and last for about 45 minutes. By the time the aura is ready to explode into a headache, I would be virtually blind. After that I’d get my vision back at a drop of a hat, and the massive headache would finish the job putting me out of service 100%. At that point all I wanted was to experience no sensory input of any kind. No sound, and especially no light. Often times touch would be a distraction too, a reminder of being alive when all you want to do is die.

We Live in an “Oryx and Crake” World

It’s been a long time since I’ve read a book from start to end. These days most of my reading is in the form of online forums, blogs, and tech news (and as of two days ago, another wonderful RPG that goes by the title “Tales of Symphonia”… but more about that on a later date). By the time I am done with those, my eyes are blurry and I don’t care for any more text in any form. As a result, most of the books I read are left abandoned somewhere between the pages of 100 and 150. Sad, but true.

Too cold for you?

Thursday, May 11th, 2006

Last few days have been on the cool side. There were a few complaints flying around, some talk about moving to warmer places, and the standard cursing. What I find funny is that these are the same people that tend to complain about it being too hot when it gets to 25C. This leaves only the 21-24 degree Celsius weather to be complaint free. Geez! How about a temperature controlled bio-suit for your next birthday?

Deep Thoughts At 6:00 (On a 24Hr Clock)

Tuesday, May 2nd, 2006

The decision is final. I’m going for an all-nighter. At this point I’d end up sleeping through the day if I hit the sack now, so I may as well see how much I can salvage by staying awake… trying to be productive, or something.

It must have been the couple of open endings I encountered during the day that have kept me from putting a closure on my day. First it was Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood, an open ending that originally left me unsatisfied. Then it was “A History of Violence” that ended without tying up all the threads (although I’d argue there really is only one ending which is pretty obvious if you rewatch the first sex scene - like you needed another reason, right? :D - and what was said after).

Few hours later I am glad for having the chance to make my own ending for Oryx and Crake. Great book, thumbs up for Margaret Atwood.

The gory side-track of life in “A History of Violence” didn’t exactly create a sleeping mood (no regrets at having watched it “just before going to sleep”). It makes you think about the simple truth that death is part of life, and that some people arrive at that final check point quietly, while others arrive with a bang. Either way, we’re all heading the same way. In the end how we got there is just a minor technicality.
