I drive a fairly small vehicle that is nearly as efficient as a Toyota Prius. I did the research on it about a year ago when I considered upgrading to a hybrid. With a Prius my savings on gas costs would have likely been less than a hundred dollars per year. I quickly abandoned the thought of making a switch to hybrid in favour of paying off the remainder of the financing on my existing vehicle. No monthly car payments after what will soon be eight years. That sounds good.

Working from a home office, I drive less than the average driver. Still, I knew there is more I could do to help offset the damage that my vehicle has and will inflict on the environment during the time I own it. A couple of weeks ago I’ve found the very thing that will help me clean up the mess that my car leaves behind. The best part? It will cost me only $39USD for the whole year.

The Sand in the Hourglass

Saturday, March 11th, 2006

I’ve made peace with WordPress and KDE (my Linux desktop). Both are working at or above expected performance. All of that without any major time investments, just a clean start and a cool head.

My last couple of weeks have trickled away at what felt like a blink of an eye. Never mind the slow and steady stream of sand making its way through the narrow neck of an hourglass. This was more like the work of a small black hole!

I’ve got a few stories started and should have at least one ready for posting over the weekend. “Seven Sins of Web Design”, “TerraPass”, “Vanilla” and a couple others are on the burner - just to give you an idea of what is coming up.

In the meanwhile if you are looking for something to get into this weekend, drop by the Bytech Web Design Forums, or the Political Fidelity (PoliFi) Forums. Both communities are open to the public and could benefit from a few new members. If online communities are not your cup of tea, drop me an IM on Skype at bytech-ca.

What ever you decide to do, keep an eye on the blog over the weekend. Some real juicy content is coming your way over the next couple of days.

“Out of Service”

Word Press is acting up. The last entry will not format the way I want it to. Word Press changes my HTML, and still screws up the final display. The footer of the page is right aligned for some reason. I understand if that was happening on a custom skin, but the default? Looks to me as if some code still needs to be refined in Word Press.

I am once again looking at alternatives, Blogger to be more specific. I’ve spent 2 hours last night trying to fix things in Word Press, and am not impressed. I always liked blogger, but I hate the centralised controls. I want to download the whole darn thing to my side and be able to administer it without ever going to the Blogger site. To my knowledge that is not possible which is why I still have not made the leap. I need to look around some more for other alternatives before I try that route again.

A Small Urban Winter Gallery

Tuesday, March 7th, 2006

Despite the fact that it is March, I can’t help but get excited when it snows. In the last week alone we’ve had about three days of the white stuff coming down. Wonderful! The temperature is very mild which combined with the snow makes for great weather to get out and wander through the neighborhood. I’ve done so with my camera and decided to share the results with the world.

I’m sharing these pictures right here in a limited size format, and on my sxc.hu account where you can download these and other pictures of mine in 2048×1536 px format (if you can’t see them at sxc.hu, it means they were not approved yet). Enjoy!
