5 years ago – give or take an hour – I crossed the border back into Canada from the USA. Yup, woke up on September 11th morning in a hotel just outside Chicago, one of the Twin Towers on fire. Crossing the border 15 hours later was fun, if your idea of fun is being interrogate by a few pompous US border guards watching porn in between stupid questions.
So, what are my deep thoughts for this important moment? Well, first I wish I had a bottle of some good Grant’s scotch to mark the moment. Second, Canada is a great place to live. Someone drink to that one for me until I’m able to take care of that one myself.
A little more history: 5 years ago I was about to enter my new apartment, and crash on the floor in my tiny new home. My mom found the place for me, and left the key in the mailbox. As small as the place was, it was my new home and I was glad to be there. Slept like a baby that night, and lived on the floor for a while after that. Seems like yesterday, but at the same time it could have been in another life time. Time is funny like that.
